One of the largest otolaryngology practices in the Raleigh area, with three conveniently located offices, Raleigh Ear, Nose, and Throat has been serving patients for over 40 years.

Our staff sees patients by appointment from 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at each of our locations, and receptionists are on duty to answer the phones from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. During regular office hours, a nurse is available to speak directly with our patients regarding any medical problems.

H. Clifton Patterson, MD
H. Clifton Patterson, MD

Dr. Patterson received his undergraduate degree from Davidson College in 1970. While at Davidson, he played on the baseball and soccer teams. He received his medical training at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His residency was completed at Harvard in 1980, after which he completed a Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at Harvard under Dr. Richard Webster. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle until 1983. In 1983, Dr. Patterson returned to his home state of North Carolina to join Raleigh Ear, Nose, and Throat. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UNC-CH and board certified in Otolaryngology.

He has served as a flight surgeon in the US Army. While on active duty in the US Army, he served in the Panama Canal Zone and Desert Storm. He is currently US Army retired.

Dr. Patterson has been with Raleigh Ear, Nose, and Throat for 27 years and has a special medical interest in nasal reconstructive surgery, sinus disease, facial and head and neck cancer, thyroid surgery, and general ENT.

Dr. Patterson enjoys outdoor activities with his wife as well as golf and has been a Southern- and North Carolina-ranked tennis player for 20 years.

Dr. Stephen Boyce graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with honors in 1978. He received his medical degree with honors from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1982 and completed his residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck surgery at the University of Colorado in 1988. While in Colorado, he served on the Doctor’s Ski Patrol at Breckenridge, Loveland, and Winter Park ski areas. He joined Raleigh ENT in 1989 and is a fellow of both the Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations.

Dr. Boyce’s practice encompasses all aspects of otolaryngology, but he especially enjoys pediatric ENT, thyroid and pituitary surgery, nasal and ear surgery, and care of voice disorders.

Dr. Boyce’s father, H. Worth Boyce, grew up in Raleigh, and his wife, Tina Savage Boyce, is from Apex. Steve, Tina, and their kids (Ryan, Kristina, and Molly) have lived in Cary since 1988. Dr. Boyce has enjoyed coaching youth sports, teaching Sunday School, attending Hurricanes games, and participating in mission trips to Appalachia and the Dominican Republic.

Mark W. Clarkson, MD
Mark W. Clarkson, MD

Dr. Clarkson was born in Roanoke, VA, in 1966, the youngest of four children. He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Graham High School in Bluefield, VA, in 1983. At the University of Virginia, he earned a degree in Religious Studies with distinction, graduating as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Immediately after college, he proceeded to medical school, also at the University of Virginia. He graduated in 1991 as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and completed his general surgery internship at Mt. Carmel Medical Center, a private hospital in downtown Columbus, Ohio. His residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery was completed at the Ohio State University Hospitals in 1996. His residency experience included a broad exposure to all surgical and non-surgical aspects of the specialty of otolaryngology. This experience included a full year of training at Children's Hospital of Columbus, during which he exclusively cared for pediatric patients.

Professionally, Dr. Clarkson's practice encompasses the full spectrum of otolaryngology, including nasal and sinus surgery, otology, and head and neck surgery, as well as general otolaryngology. He has a special interest in pediatric otolaryngology, sinus disease, and thyroid surgery, but is available for evaluation of any problems related to the ENT specialty.

Dr. Clarkson married his "high school sweetheart.” They live in Cary with their three school-age children. He is an avid golfer and enjoys watching and participating in almost any athletic activity, especially his children's soccer and basketball games. Mark is an active member of Colonial Baptist Church in Cary, serving as a deacon and a choir member.

Dr. Doyle grew up in Smithtown, New York, a town on eastern Long Island. He was valedictorian of his high school class. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1987 and majored in history. At Virginia he was an Echols Scholar. He graduated Magna Cum Laude, was inducted to Phi Beta Kappa, and lived on Jefferson's Lawn during his fourth year in Charlottesville.

He graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1991 and completed his residency in otolaryngology at Duke in 1996.

After residency, Dr. Doyle served in the US Army as an otolaryngologist stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to Duke, where he completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery.

His practice encompasses general otolaryngology, with particular interests in nasal and sinus surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and allergy.

He met his wife Ellen at Duke, where she worked as a nurse in pediatric cardiac surgery. The Doyles have two daughters, Caroline and Claire. They enjoy college basketball, working on their new home, and visiting the North Carolina coast.

Dr. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from the University of Virginia. An Echols Scholar and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Dr. Brown also completed study-abroad programs in Mexico and Italy. Dr. Brown received her medical degree with honors from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1997, where she received the American Medical Women's Association Glascow Memorial Achievement Citation.

Dr. Brown completed her internship in general surgery and residency in Otoloaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery while at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. During her residency, Dr. Brown was trained in all aspects of otolaryngology, but especially enjoyed her eight months each at the Children's Hospital of Alabama and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Brown's practice encompasses all aspects of general otolaryngology, with special interest in pediatric otolaryngology and endocrine surgery. She is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, as well as the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.

Dr. Brown and her family enjoy spending time outdoors. Her community involvement has included the Junior League of Raleigh and the Wake County Commission for Women.

Matthew J. Gerber, MD
Matthew J. Gerber, MD

Born and raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., Dr. Matthew Gerber graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, magna cum laude. Dr. Gerber earned his medical degree from The University of Maryland-Baltimore, graduating magna cum laude as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society.

Dr. Gerber completed both his general surgery internship and his residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Dr. Gerber's residency included thorough training in both pediatric and adult otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. He is Board Certified by the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Dr. Gerber's practice encompasses all aspects of head and neck medicine and surgery in both children and adults. He particularly enjoys taking care of pediatric patients, as well as patients with ear disease, nasal and sinus disease, and thyroid disease.

Dr. Gerber, his wife Kathryn, and their two young children live in Raleigh. They enjoy a variety of lifelong outside interests, including athletics, sailing, and fishing. He has enjoyed coaching youth basketball, soccer, and baseball through the Salvation Army Athletic programs. Their family particularly enjoys ACC basketball and the North Carolina coast.

William F. Durland, Jr., MD
William F. Durland, Jr., MD

Dr. Durland grew up in Monroe, North Carolina, and graduated as valedictorian at Monroe High School in 1988. At the University of North Carolina, he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and went on to graduate with honors and distinction with a degree in Chemistry in 1992. He worked in research and development at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals for one year and then attended medical school at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with honors. While in medical school, he spent a year of dedicated research time studying the physiologic pathways of nasal allergies and also investigated the significance of tumor markers in head and neck cancers. He went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in otolaryngology at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. He finished his residency as chief resident in 2003.

Dr. Durland is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He enjoys all aspects of otolaryngology. He has a special interest in otology (hearing disorders and ear surgery), laryngology (treatment of voice problems), pediatric otolaryngology, rhinology (nasal allergy/sinus surgery), skin cancer reconstruction, and thyroid surgery.

Dr. Durland is married and has two young children, with one more on the way. His wife Kimberly is a native of Raleigh, where she graduated from Sanderson High School and was an accomplished swimmer with the Raleigh YMCA. Dr. Durland enjoys spending time with his family, watching ACC sports, and listening to music. He enjoys participating in many sports including basketball, golf, skiing, and fly-fishing.

Steven J. McMahon, MD

Dr. Steve McMahon grew up in Virginia and graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1988. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Duke University, graduating magna cum laude in 1992. Immediately after college, he attended Emory University School of Medicine and graduated with honors in 1996. He went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in otolaryngology at the Emory University Hospitals, including extensive training in both pediatric and adult otolaryngology, as well as head and neck cancer. During his residency in Atlanta, he spent a year of dedicated research on speech and swallowing disorders. He completed his residency in May of 2002 and entered private practice in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Dr. McMahon is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. His practice encompasses all aspects of general otolaryngology, and he has particular interest in pediatric otolaryngology, as well as management of allergy and sinus disorders.

Dr. McMahon enjoys spending family time with his wife Elisabeth and their two young daughters, Ellie and Sadie. He also enjoys traveling, running, golf, skiing, and watching college basketball. The McMahon family is happy to return to his wife's home state of North Carolina.
