Practice History

Raleigh Ear, Nose and Throat began in 1965 when Dr. Nathaniel Sparrow opened the doors of our first office on Saint Mary’s street in Raleigh. Although Dr. Sparrow was not the first ENT doctor in Raleigh, he introduced a number of new surgical techniques for conservative ear surgery and head and neck cancer surgery. Alexander “Sandy” Hattaway joined Nat Sparrow a few years later, and the practice continued to grow with the addition of Bob Majors, Ed Garrabrant, and Jim Whicker. The practice moved to Haworth Drive for a short time and in 1976 settled in the current location at Anderson Drive and Six Forks Road. Throughout the '70s and early '80s Raleigh ENT provided most of the ENT care in Raleigh, covering Rex Hospital, Wake Medical Center, and Raleigh Community Hospital (now Duke Raleigh Hospital). Raleigh ENT opened an office in Cary in 1985 and has been serving Cary longer than any other practice. Raleigh ENT remains the largest private practice ENT group in the Triangle, with 8 board-certified physicians and offices in Raleigh, Cary, and Brier Creek. Every one of the physicians graduated with honors from universities in North Carolina or Virginia, but their training in pediatric and adult ENT came from programs across the country, including Harvard, Colorado, Ohio State, Alabama-Birmingham, Wisconsin, and Emery, as well as Duke and UVA. At Raleigh ENT, we are dedicated to providing modern care for children and adults with old-fashioned personal service, as we have for over 40 years. When you call us for an appointment, you will always talk to a person, not a machine. We look forward to serving you and your entire family as we have for five decades.
